Y2K Japanese-label jeans, heavily worked. Light wash straight-to-slightly-flared leg with grey twill side panels running the full length of both outseams, a red-piped zip pocket at the right thigh, a second zip pocket at the back yoke, and applied denim patch panels at the knee, seat and hem. A white printed panel at the left thigh carries a pastel bubble graphic reading "Betty's Blue / Stay Loving / Sunshine", with a round "Betty's Blue" woven badge at the right shin and shield badges at the left hip. Red contrast topstitching throughout; drawcord toggles at the hem.
The pink waistband tab reads "BETTY'S BLUE / SHINJI ABE / Very fine wear products". Betty's Blue was founded in 1985 by Japanese designer Shinji Abe and is known for exactly this vocabulary - vibrant retro casualwear and character motifs. The printed thigh panel is a good example: a bee holding a wand, a pineapple and a lemon with faces, and a green grasshopper, scattered through pastel dots with "Betty's Blue", "Stay Loving" and "Cutie" set at angles. Original operations wound down in the late 2000s, which is what makes surviving pieces collectible in the Y2K and J-fashion secondhand markets.
Condition: the distressing, patch panels and frayed openings are the design. No unintended flaws found.
